Sir Richard Arkwright’s Masson Mills Band
Masson Mills Band c. 1896
Since its association with Sir Richard Arkwright’s Masson Mills, the band has helped to raise over £60,000 for local and regional charities.
In 2007 Masson Mills embarked on the sponsorship of the Sir Richard Arkwright’s Masson Mills Band, reviving a much-beloved tradition dating back to the nineteenth century, as Masson Mills supported its own band in the 1890’s. With this sponsorship an important piece of Derbyshire history has been saved. It is believed that the partnership of a Mill with a brass band is a unique development within the 21st century.
Sir Richard Arkwright’s Masson Mills Band is based at Masson Mills just south of Matlock Bath. The Band has evolved from one first started by their Musical Director and Principal Conductor Stephen Shimwell nearly 30 years ago. The band now comprises 35 players and is known for its active development of talented local young musicians, who gain invaluable experience before some move on to study music. The band delights audiences with up to eight concerts a year and has produced several CDs catering for a wide range of musical tastes.
The Band’s management team are committed to promoting high profile musical concerts to raise money for Derbyshire based charities and other good causes.
