Hydropower at Masson Mills

The water turbine operating at Masson dates from 1973 and was manufactured by Gilbert Gilkes and Gordon of Kendal. It is a ‘pit Francis’ type and produces a maximum of 160kW at 115rpm on an operating head of 3.35m.

Sitting within the Derwent Hydro group of companies Masson Mills is well served by hydropower engineers, ensuring that even at over 50 years old this turbine still generates consistently. Hydropower installations are extremely durable and reliable with the right attention.

The electricity generated by the hydropower installation at Masson would be sufficient for around 270 typical homes and is considerably more than the current consumption of the Mills.
